In 1974, an urbanized retelling of L. Frank Baum's "Wizard of Oz" hit Broadway with "The Wiz." The Broadway play took the classic children's tale and set it in the context of African-American culture and ended up very successful, winning seven Tony Awards. The Triple 7 Dance Studio is bringing "The Wiz" back to the stage and has four shows taking place at the Infinite Energy Theater in Duluth, Georgia on Jan. 20-21, 2018.
Many fans of pop culture likely remember the 1978 movie adaptation of "The Wiz," as it starred Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and Richard Pryor. Also appearing in the movie were some of the original stage show actors such as Ted Ross (The Lion) and Mabel King (Wicked Witch of the West). In 2015, a live television adaptation aired on NBC with Common, Mary J. Blige, Queen Latifa and more in the cast.
Triple 7 Dance is an award-winning dance studio located in Atlanta focused on developing talented youth and adult performers. "The Wiz" will be one of their first big performances of 2018.
Tickets for "The Wiz" are on sale right now through AXS. Prices for the show are $20 and there will be two shows on Jan. 20, 2018 and two on Jan. 21, 2018.
