As Gwinnett County Public Schools makes hiring decisions for next school year, when it’s expected to have 172,000 students, it will have an annual job fair next week to interview certified teachers.
The job fair is scheduled to be from 8 a.m. to noon on March 22 at the Gwinnett Center at 6400 Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth. Those interested should visit the GCPS web site at www.gwinnett.k12.ga.us to apply online because there are a limited number of interview times available.
The district is looking for candidates who are certified, or will be certified by this fall, in math, science, special education, speech language pathology, Spanish, French, IT programming/engineering, computer science, elementary endorsements in English for speakers of other languages, gifted education and elementary certified candidates who are highly fluent in Spanish or French with a complete mastery of the vocabulary necessary to teach elementary content in those languages.
Associate Superintendent Frances Davis recently told the Gwinnett County Board of Education that the district expects to hire 850 teachers as it makes personnel plans for next school year. As of late last month, the district had 17 vacancies, mostly in special education, which continues to be listed as a “critical need” area in the district’s staffing reports.
In recent months, the district has also experienced shortages in speech language pathology, middle and high school French and Spanish teachers and bus managers.
“We’re really, really focusing more heavily on our critical needs,” Davis said. “There are some areas that are not as critical as others, so we’re making sure we’re reaching out to all of the applicants in the critical needs area.”
